Thorougly Modern Master

Designer Troy Beasley pairs bold geometric shapes with luxe fabrics and an energizing color palette for a look that is appealingly polished.

I love the yellow with the grey, black and white, the room feels fresh and still peaceful!

High Style Meets High Tech

Designer Troy Beasley takes luxury and convenience to a new level in this master bedroom. The 12-foot chocolate mohair headboard visually grounds the room while elegantly concealing controls for the room's lighting and electronic devices.

Bright Is Just Right

Designer Gina Fitzsimmons deftly balances vibrant lime and cool blue with crisp, clean white for a look that is both energetic and serene.

Subtle Sophistication

Anchor gray walls create a soothing, neutral backdrop for metallic touches and creamy bedding, draperies and furnishings.

Tangled Up In Blue

Designer Angelo Surmelis creates a cocoon-like effect by painting both the walls and coffered ceiling in a cool, soothing blue.

StudioDesk Computer

Minimalist table design for learning, a simple computer desk/ laptop

Desk Computer
This desk was made for a clutter free environment. The minimalist design doesn`t allow interference with any kind of disorganized space. A storage space built into the surface of the desk allows for peripherals and cables to be hidden. Mahogany wood and faux leather were used to build it and a beautiful design makes the Studio Desk a desirable piece of furniture.

Overpacked

I seem to have a rather persistent problem when it comes to packing a suitcase and that is I completely overpack.  Every single time I just can't help myself and the worst thing of all is that my carry-on luggage could be compared to everything 20 people would need for a 2 week holiday.  It is just ridiculous.

However, after hauling my usual 10 tonnes of so-called 'I can't live without' luggage on a 20 hour flight from Brisbane to New York a few days I ago it was quite humorous to read an article by Amanda Fortini in the New York Times this morning in which she proclaims her obsession with the overpack too.

I was comforted by the fact that she too has packing anxiety and as her friend kindly puts it - 'It's like you're traveling by ocean liner.  Will you be accompanied by a porter?'  I WISH I could be accompanied by a porter.  Usually my husband is around and has in the past helped me lug large seashells in my carry-on luggage from Hawaii and cushion covers, mirrors and a painting from LA but this time it is just me and my carry-on and let me tell you it is exhausting running for a connecting flight with 3 heavy bags.  I have vowed and declared that on our return flight next week I will only be bringing 1 bag into the cabin with me and the rest will be checked in.  It will be interesting to see how I go.

It is snowing here in New York which is quite amazing as this time last week I was swimming in our pool with Harry and Max in 30 + degrees.

Artist Liu Bolin's disappearance into the landscape.

Hiding in the City No. 94- In the Woods, 2010

Came across this amazing guy the other day.
37-year-old artist Liu Bolin, from Shandong, China camouflages himself into the environment.

Hiding in the City No. 14- Er Guo White Wine Factory, 2006
Hiding in the City No. 91- Great Wall, 2010

The talented Liu Bolin says his art is a protest against the actions of the Government, who shut down his art studio in 2005 and persecutes artists. It’s about not fitting into modern society. The government had stipulated that it didn't want artists gathering and working together. Despite these problems with the authorities, Liu’s works are appreciated internationally.
Liu said he wanted to show how city surroundings affected people living in them.
He added that the inspiration behind his work was a sense of not fitting in to modern society and was a silent protest against the persecution of artists.

In an interview with the Daily Mail he said: 'Some people call me the invisible man, but for me it's what is not seen in a picture which is really what tells the story.
'After graduating from school I couldn't find suitable work and I felt there was no place for me in society.
'I experienced the dark side of society, without social relations, and had a feeling that no one cared about me, I felt myself unnecessary in this world.
'From that time, my attitude turned from dependence into revolting against the system.'
Liu said he was further pushed on with his work when the Chinese authorities shut down his art studio in Beijing in 2005.
He said: 'At that time, contemporary art was in quick development in Beijing, but the government decided it did not want artists like us to gather and live together.
'Also many exhibitions were forced to close.
'The situation for artists in China is very difficult and the forced removal of the artist's studio is in fact my direct inspiration of this series of photographs, Hiding In The City.'

Liu begins by choosing the background location. Then he stands in position as the blank canvas for up to 10 hours as his helpers, armed with paintbrushes make him disappear into the surrounding landscape.
'There are many people who like my work I think because my work has a quiet strength, in the photographs.
'I am standing, but there is a silent protest, the protest against the environment for the survival, the protest against the state.
'I wanted to photograph the reality of scenes of China's development today.
'My work is a kind of reminder, to remind people what the community we live in really looks like, and what kind of problems exist.'
Hiding in the City No. 85, 2009

Liu Bolin has a huge portfolio of amazing work, in fact I had difficulty in limiting the amount of photos in this post to ten. If you would like to see the full portfolio of his work, you can find it here. www.elikleinfineart.com

Rhythm & Oranges

Castle Hill, Budapest, Hungary  © Doug Hickok

The repetition of windows and a roofline's shadow, plus various hues of orange, continue yesterday's theme of rhythm and color. I can't think of any jazz artists that would be appropriate for today's theme. But, for some obscure reason, that only my brain can understand, Bugs Bunny and piano keys come to mind. Hmm.

Here's a link to explain the rather obscure allusion to Bugs Bunny and piano keys... Hungarian Rhapsody #2

Crocodile Leather Desk Elegant Design

Crocodile leather desk design from simple. Design of a desk into an elegant leather.

This design is one of the most elegant made from crocodile leather. For those who don`t mind genuine leather, the handcrafted Crocodile Leather Desk by Italian furniture designer Sabino Aprile is the perfectly elegant addition to an office. Made from Polish stainless steel, wood and crocodile leather, the desk has a classic feel.

Rhythm & Blues

Folly Beach Fishing Pier, Folly Beach, SC  © Doug Hickok

Beneath the Folly Beach Fishing Pier, a repetition of pilings and the blurred motion of the sea add a jazzy rhythm to this twilight scene... hey, wait, a little rhythm, a little syncopation, a little improvisation... all of a sudden, I'm feeling kind of blue, a Miles Davis Kind of Blue.

This post is dedicated to MT.

Photography note: To accomplish this bluesy photo, I made a 5 second exposure to blur the ocean waves, and adjusted the camera shot setting to tungsten as the light faded to dusk.

Love Your Laundry Room

Concealed Laundry

Sliding doors and a front-loading machine combine for beauty and efficiency.
By concealing a front-loading washer and dryer in a custom cabinet, this space becomes multipurpose. One minute it's a fully functional laundry with plenty of room for folding and hanging clothes. Then, once clothes are put away, it becomes a decorative serving area.
The key to this laundry solution is the front-loading washer and dryer, because a square cabinet fits around the appliances to conceal them. Although front-loading appliances may cost more than standard units (full-size stacking units are a similar investment), they are worth every additional penny when making an awkward, little-used space more efficient.
Stenciled motifs on each door provide a distinctive finishing touch. Although this family chose to use sliding doors, a piece of fabric or a standard door made to fit the cabinet would also work.

Laundry and Craft Rooms

The sink in this stylish and functional laundry room has a wall-mounted faucet; the backsplash is made up of festive glass tiles. Cabinetry, with beaded-board fronts, surrounds three walls.

Laundry Room Chic

Chic Laundry Rooms

Turn a lackluster laundry room into a place that’s a pleasure to work in. Pretty wallpaper and a handy utility sink turn it into a flowery workstation for everyday chores.

Hall Laundry Area

This home's side entrance functions full-time as a stylish space and part-time as a laundry room.
Because this side entrance hall doubles as a laundry area, guests routinely arrived to be greeted by... the washer and dryer. That is, until the homeowners devised a clever disguise.
A piece of solid maple rests directly on top of the front-loading appliances; it provides a great spot for folding laundry. Because the countertop isn't permanently attached, it can easily be removed if either unit needs repair work.
The durable upholstery-weight skirt material is attached to a shower curtain tension rod. Making it a breeze to access the appliances, the skirt is divided into three sections.
Across from the washer and dryer is a full wall of cabinets that are painted a crisp white. They extend to the ceiling, providing maximum storage. Filled with vases, china, and cleaning items, the cabinets are a perfectly organized catch-all.
Laundry room in closet

Closet-Turned-Laundry

In its previous life, the closet that holds a stackable washer/dryer was the kitchen pantry.
The homeowners turned the door around so it faced the hall. A pull-out shelf in the center of the appliance makes fast work of folding clothes. To add interest to the space, the couple chose a French door for the closet. They then installed a custom cabinet, painted a glossy white, next to the closet. It features three pull-out hampers and ample storage space for linens and detergent.

Just a note:  I ordered the most delightful laundry fragrance, you use it in the rinse cycle and only a capful will do. The scent I ordered from Tyler is called, "Diva". I promise, you will LOVE this product.
